Our Mackinac Trip 2024: Just Walking, Laughing & Making Memories

Our Mackinac Island Family Adventure – Summer 2024

After years of talking about it, we finally made it happen — our family trip to Mackinac Island! All 14 of us packed our bags and set out on this long-awaited adventure. My husband and I had visited years ago, but we’d never taken the kids. This time, we did it. It wasn’t easy to coordinate (getting 14 people in one place never is), but it was so worth it — three full days of fun, family, and unforgettable memories.

Where We Stayed

We didn’t stay on the island — it’s pricey and books up fast — so we stayed just across the water in Mackinaw City at the Crown Choice Inn. I picked it because it had an indoor water park (great for the kids) and a nearby beach.

Heads up: They don’t serve food, but they do have tables in a large dining area where you can bring your own meals. I booked through Booking.com, but you might get a better deal by calling the hotel directly.

Travel Tip

If you’re driving in Michigan, keep an eye out for road construction. There’s a lot of it! Governor Whitmer invested heavily in road repairs (some say for the election). Check the MDOT site or AM radio for live updates. My husband rigged up live traffic info on our dash — it saved us time.

Day One: Dinner, Laughs & Water Slides

That evening, we ate at the Dixie Saloon Brewery – Restaurant and Bar – Mackinaw City. We were lucky — all 14 of us sat together at one big table! We laughed, ate well, and the kids had a great time reconnecting. It reminded me of when they were little — all that joyful noise!

A Funny Dinner Moment

We had a silly moment: Kendra was blowing a paper straw wrapper across the table whenit flew and hit a man right in the face. We were shocked — but also couldn’t stop laughing. Before we left, that kind man handed her a paper napkin folded into a flower. What a sweet soul!

Evening Fun at the Hotel

Later that night, some of the younger ones walked the mile back to the hotel while the rest of us drove. We ended the night with water park fun, then played card games and shared snacks until after 2 a.m., thanks to my sister who brought the games.

Day Two: The Ferry Ride & Island Mayhem

We got up early to catch Shepler’s Ferry — one of the only ways to reach Mackinac Island. (The others are private plane or boat.)

Breakfast Before the Boat

Before boarding, we had breakfast at Darrow’s Family Restaurant. The host wasn’t thrilled about seating 14 of us and gave us a bit of a stink-eye. Even so, the food was great, and we powered through.

A Rough Ride to Mackinac Island on Ferry 10/23/09

The ferry started out calm. Then, halfway across, it sped up and began rocking. Jim and I stayed downstairs — we’re not boat people. Meanwhile, the rest of the family upstairs were in for a surprise.

Six of them came off the boat completely soaked — kids crying, clothes dripping. Of course, no one got pictures — it was total chaos. We had to buy all new clothes. Some even had to go commando for the day. After spending $1,000 and losing two hours, we were finally back on track.

Regrouping on the Island

Once we arrived and changed into dry clothes, we started exploring the island. Spirits were high again, and the kids were excited to start their island adventure.

Exploring Mackinac Island: Horses, Fudge & Charm

Mackinac Island is like stepping back in time — no cars, just horses, bikes, and walking paths. After a much-needed lunch, we split up and explored the island.

Main Street & Hidden Gems

The main street is full of fudge shops, souvenir stores, and restaurants. Beyond the busy sidewalks, we found charming bed-and-breakfasts and quiet neighborhoods. Surprisingly, you can rent condos right above the stores — something I hadn’t known before.

Visiting the Butterfly House

Later, we visited a historic church and then headed to the The Butterfly House | Mackinac Island | Butterfly House— one of the day’s highlights. My granddaughter Kendra had a butterfly land right on her head! She stood completely still while the kind staff helped her. They were so patient and full of fun facts. We also saw walking stick bugs and other interesting creatures.

A Rainy Wrap-Up

As we headed back, we admired several historic homes converted into cozy inns. We had hoped to see the Grand Hotel, but the rain came in fast. Because of that, we skipped the long walk and started making our way back to the ferry dock.

The Return Trip: Pizza & Transformers

We caught the ferry back to the mainland. Everyone stayed on the lower deck this time — no one wanted a repeat soaking! Although it was a bumpy ride again, we arrived safely.

A Tasty Dinner

Back in town, our son and daughter-in-law grabbed pizza for everyone. We wandered through downtown Mackinaw City, which was filled with the smell of food and the sound of laughter.

A Fun Surprise

In the center of town, we came across a life-size Mackinaw City, MI – Mack-A-Tron. It looked so real, we thought it might actually talk! The kids were fascinated by it, even though it stayed silent.

Day Three: Waterfalls & Heading Home

The next morning, after coffee and a few more games, we packed up to head home. However, Jim and I decided to make a quick side trip to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. We crossed the Mackinac Bridge into St. Ignace and followed scenic back roads — about 60 miles away.

Meeting at the Falls

A serene waterfall cascading over a rocky ledge beside a green tree.

My daughter Kelly tried to meet us there, but heavy traffic delayed her. Luckily, we eventually caught up and enjoyed the views together. The waterfall was powerful and beautiful — a peaceful way to end our trip.

Taking the Scenic Route

We chose not to take the freeway back. Instead, we drove the back roads, which only added about 30 minutes. It was worth every second for the calm, pretty scenery. We sang songs, talked, and soaked up our last moments together.

Final Thoughts: Lessons, Laughter & Love

This trip had everything: chaos, laughter, great food, ferry surprises, and even a paper-napkin flower. If you’ve never been to Mackinac Island, I highly recommend it — but plan ahead!
