That Orange Guy: A Reflection on Politics and Accountability

By Rachelle Ostrosky

When I sat in the nail salon, Lena, my nail technician, leaned over and whispered, “That Orange Guy is ruining the country.” I couldn’t help but laugh—because, let’s be honest, we all know who she was talking about.

The truth is, many of us feel the same way. Other countries don’t fear, or respect America like they once did. Instead of seeing strength, they laugh behind our backs—and yes, I think That Orange Guy has something to do with it.

Policies That Divide Instead of United

I’ve tried to find something in his policies to agree with, but I can’t. Not one thing. And that’s my right—to voice my opinion. You have that right too, and I welcome respectful comments (just keep it clean—I won’t post anything laced with profanity).

One issue that still shocks me is the long list of pardons. From the January 6th riot to questionable celebrities like the Chrisleys for tax evasion, it feels like the rules don’t apply equally.

January 6th Cannot Be Erased

How can anyone pretend January 6th didn’t happen? I saw it. The news covered it. Officers died. People stormed the Capitol, waving flags while smashing windows. Yet, somehow, history is being rewritten, and attempts are being made to erase it from places like the Smithsonian.

What troubles me most is the pardons connected to that day. More than 1,600 people were involved, and many were caught on camera damaging the Capitol, burning the American flag, and attacking democracy itself. Instead of accountability, they walked away with pardons.

Let’s be honest—if it had been you or me, we wouldn’t have been pardoned. We would have been charged and serving time. But under That Orange Guy, even the most violent actions were excused.

Celebrity Pardons and the Chrisleys

Let’s go back to the pardons for a moment. Take the Chrisleys, for example. Tax evasion is a crime against the government and the American people. If you or I failed to pay our taxes, we’d be in real trouble. But because they are celebrities, they get a free pass.

I used to watch the Chrisleys on TV, but now I see them differently. They didn’t pay their fair share, just like we all have to, yet they’re planning to restart their show and flaunt their wealth in our faces. Once again, the wealthy get away with it, and the rest of us are left shaking our heads.

Promises Not Kept

Tell me, what promise did That Orange Guy actually keep? I can’t think of one. Meanwhile, the cost of living keeps climbing.

For ordinary Americans—especially those of us heading toward retirement—this makes life more challenging than it should be.

  1. Cars cost more than ever.
  2. Meat and groceries are sky-high
  3. Gas prices remain painful.
  4. Utilities and services keep going up.

The Middle-Class Reality

I’m not poor. I’m middle-class America. I live in a somewhat rural area, so I don’t have to drive far unless I’m heading to Detroit (and that’s an hour or more, especially with freeway construction). But even in my small town, the rising costs are impossible to ignore.

Like many of you, I’m trying different ways to keep up—digital marketing, selling on eBay, running an Etsy shop, and more. Every extra dollar matters.
